a dictionary for lovers

This side project came out of my final assignment for Photoshop class. I loved the original image (slide 3) but I wanted to see what the astronaut could fall into, after I removed the background.

I just learned how to do this pop-out effect in Illustrator, and with the idea of "loneliness" in my head from class, I had the vision of making the figure fall into the letter L, to be swallowed up by a feeling of longing.

I'll see if I can continue this series more. The idea of a "dictionary for lovers" is inspired by two books I read about a decade apart: "A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers" and "The Liar's Dictionary."

that lonely feeling 🔭

Without realizing it, things I read and watch sometimes coalesce around a theme. A few weeks ago, it was the idea of being lonely, captured most cleanly in the movie "Lars and the Real Girl."

In planning my last Photoshop assignment, I started thinking about how sometimes loneliness can creep up even when you're already next to a person you love - the fear and longing that comes from realizing how fleeting each moment is and how hard it can be to connect.

After many iterations, I ended up with this tiny astronaut in Central Park. I added in the originals in slides 2-4 so you can see how I spliced and edited them together. In the end, I love how this final piece has a much bigger sense of scale than I originally intended, and a dreamier quality of light and color from my photo editing.

I'm so excited to share how this project turned out! This poem is special to me, so I'm incredibly happy with the final result. Being satisfied with my own work is hard - I'm my worst critic, always - but when a design clicks into place like this, it makes the hours of swearing at Photoshop totally worth it.

My professor asked me to try updating the Poetry Foundation's website while still remaining true to the style guide. I love the clean lines and stark color palette of the original, but it was a fun challenge thinking through how to emphasize the poetry/essay spotlight feature on the site. I would love to learn how to actually build something like this someday!

"just a thick clutch of muscle/ lopsided/ mute." 🫀

For the second Photoshop class assignment, we have to center typography in our design. I chose to create an illustration for the poem "Heart to Heart" by Rita Dove, with the goal of recreating the landing page of the Poetry Foundation to showcase it.

I came across this poem a few years ago, and I've always loved the lines that follow the one I quoted above (though "thick clutch of muscle" is a brilliant close second!) It reads:
"Still,
I feel it inside
its cage sounding
a dull tattoo:
I want, I want--"

And man, the rhythm and truth of that has stuck with me ever since! So here are some initial iterations, plus an original illustration I did back when I first read the poem.

The heart (Kenny Eliason) and statue (Engin Akyurt) are both adapted from photos from Unsplash, with the colors and text added by me.

advocacy poster ideas! We've been doing a lot of

advocacy poster ideas!

We've been doing a lot of beneficial ownership stuff at work lately, so it was on my mind when I was brainstorming my first assignment! For context, knowing the person who ultimately owns or benefits from a company or other legal vehicle is an important tool to tackle corruption, fraud, and abuses like environmental or labor violations. 🤓

The bottom half (that helpfully says "reveals corruption," the irony!) got cut off by IG because I used an A4 layout. But still! I'm super pleased with how it came out for my first class project. I had a vision of applying a punk movement aesthetic and I like the final vibe! I also used my own hand at the top - I want to experiment more with creating assets from scratch!

✨️ photoshop ✨️

I'm finally starting my Photoshop class this week! This assignment is from the textbook we're using - to color correct, straighten, and adjust an old photo, including removing an extra person off to the right. This first photo is my work, and the second is the original!

I'm sure this is the sort of thing I'll look back on and realize how basic my skills were, but for now it feels like actual magic 😂 I'm excited to see what I learn over the next seven weeks - stay tuned for updates!

✨️ happy accidents ✨️

I painted this based on a Bob Ross video, as part of an extended brunch-n-paint with friends! This is an acrylic piece, with a lot of cursing and brush-washing to achieve this watercolor effect.

I spent a lot of time agonizing over the last piece I painted - the tree islands in the water, which came out much darker in the reflections than I wanted. I was ready to repaint it when I realized I'd lose the soft transitions of color in the water. And the more I looked, the more I realized that I liked it as it was - the islands now look like they're floating, for a bit of a surrealist touch.

Another good lesson to embrace mistakes as happy accidents~

Looking back on one of my first layout projects!

I did my first freelance project with @ndidemocracy to bring the stories of young Solomon Islanders to life. It was an amazing opportunity to close the loop on a project I used to work on with the incredibly talented Ancuta Hansen. The report gives a voice to NDI's youth advocates, highlighting their research projects to protect the environment in their communities.

This project pushed me creatively in so many ways, but I wasn't satisfied with how I used to showcase it. So I took the time recently to apply my new mockup skills to this report, as part of a broader portfolio revamp. There's a ton of great content and gorgeous photos taken by Ancuta, so I wanted to find a way to better highlight the final product. Check out my portfolio for details and the link to the report!

The world is full of design inspiration. My journey as an artist relies as much on seeing others push boundries and try new things as it does on the actual sweat and tears of practicing. When I feel like I've hit a wall - where my creativity runs dry or my skills can't match my imagination - I take a walk. It's incredible how many talented artists are out there, and seeing their work inspires me to keep going.

Here's a selection of some beautiful work I saw while traveling around Spain. In order:
- A mural outside of Arte Bar in downtown Alicante
- Librería La Fabulosa in Malasaña, Madrid
- Postcards from La Intrusa, also in Malasaña, an adorable boutique I kept coming back to
- Menu samples from Salmon Guru in Madrid, which had such a fun, maximalist vibe I loved (including SO MANY godzilla references!)
